Small Group Discussion Questions — Daniel 5:13–31

Too Proud to Listen, Too Blind to See

Observation & Understanding — Questions 1–5

  1. What had Belshazzar heard about Daniel, and what did he offer Daniel for interpreting the writing? How did Daniel respond? (Verses 13–17)
  2. Why did Daniel remind Belshazzar of Nebuchadnezzar’s rise, pride, and humiliation before explaining the handwriting? (Verses 18–21)
  3. What does the phrase “although you knew all this” reveal about Belshazzar’s responsibility for his actions? (Verse 22)
  4. How had Belshazzar dishonored God? What contrast did Daniel draw between the king’s idols and the living God? (Verse 23)
  5. What did MENE, TEKEL, and PERES mean, and how did the events that night fulfill God’s message? (Verses 24–31)

Deeper Discussion — Questions 1–5

  1. Daniel refused the king’s rewards before delivering his message. How can the desire for approval, recognition, or financial gain compromise someone’s willingness to speak truth?
  2. Belshazzar knew what had happened to Nebuchadnezzar but failed to humble himself. Why can people recognize the consequences of someone else’s pride while remaining blind to their own?
  3. Daniel described God as the One “who holds your breath in His hand.” How does that truth challenge our understanding of independence, ownership, and success?
  4. Belshazzar possessed wealth, authority, and status, yet God found him wanting. How can outward success hide spiritual poverty—even within a church?
  5. The sermon contrasts Belshazzar’s self-exaltation with Christ’s humility. How does Jesus’ death and resurrection give us hope as we face the reality of sin and judgment?

Personal Application — Questions 1–5

  1. What truth from God’s Word do you already understand but have been slow to obey? What specific step of obedience will you take this week?
  2. How do you usually respond when someone corrects you? What would a humble response look like in a situation you are facing now?
  3. If your calendar and spending revealed your priorities, what would they show? What change would help you use your remaining days more wisely?
  4. What are you tempted to trust for security besides God? How could you practice trusting Him while still handling your responsibilities faithfully?
  5. As you examine your relationship with God, what are you relying on for acceptance before Him? How does the gospel call you to respond today?
